When I was 13 years old, I moved to Merriam Woods, -a neighboring town to Rockaway Beach. It was a drastically different environment than I had ever been exposed to. Our first day there I remember driving through our new neighborhood with my family to the movie rental store and seeing a man in his underwear shoot a chicken with a handgun. The following years were filled with the exploration of creeks, cliffs, abandoned houses, and social landscapes that offered a new type of experience.
The Merriam Woods/Rockaway Beach area has a rough past. Drugs were brought in decades ago, and with that addiction & brokenness. Bridge of Faith Community Church has spent over 10 years cultivating community and empowering people with the love of their Creator; individuals have found freedom from their addictions, and in turn families are thriving.
A couple weeks ago I was asked to come out and take some baseball photos. Afterwards, I roamed around looking for moments that told stories. I encourage you to take 10-15 seconds to look at each photo, to take in these moments, to reflect on what it was like being that age, and to celebrate the fact that these kids are living in a community where scorched earth has found new life sown by loving hands.
Side note: I don't usually request such direct interaction, but I would really like to know your thoughts on these! I'm looking to take on more projects like this, and want to know how these photos speak to you.
